The GOP runoff for the 1st Congressional District nears and candidates Curtis Bostic and Mark Sanford are trying to rack up endorsements. Neither may get the backing of current 3rd District Congressman Jeff Duncan, but he hints at handicapping the race.
“It’s going to be interesting to see what the former governor can do after all the things that he’s put our state through over time,” he told affiliate WCRS in Greenwood. He endorsed state Senator Larry Grooms, who came in third in the first primary. Summerville Patch Wednesday updated the list of GOP run-off endorsements.
“I wonder whether a lot of the votes that Gov. Sanford didn’t get were actually votes in support of a candidate or were actually anti-Sanford votes. And if they were anti-Sanford, will they vote for someone else, in spite of Sanford getting 37 percent,” Duncan said.
He added that he will not endorse at this point: “I’ve got to serve with one of these gentlemen.”
But that depends if either can defeat Democratic nominee Elizabeth Colbert Busch, who Duncan described as a “credible” candidate with lots of money to spend.
Both candidates face off Thursday at a SCGOP sponsored debate in Charleston. The run-off is April 2 for the district that stretches from Charleston to Hilton Head.
