Sumter Police say a 3-year-old child died after accidentally shooting himself. Police said they are investigating the incident involving a small boy at Magnolia Manor Apartments Tuesday morning.
Officers say when they responded to the scene around 10 a.m., they discovered the 3-year-old in the apartment with an apparent gunshot wound. Residents of the apartment told police the incident happened when the child found the gun in the apartment and fired it.
Police said the toddler was not identified because authorities were still trying to notify his family at the time of their original announcement. The boy was apparently visiting from Georgia.
Investigators believe that the incident was a self-inflicted gunshot, but say they are still trying to determine exactly what happened.
