A former Piggly Wiggly grocery store mascot was shot and killed after escaping from its pen in western Charleston County on Tuesday.
Charleston County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating after the pig, which belonged to the nonprofit animal rescue organization LEARN, was shot dead by a motorist.
WCSC TV reports that Maggie the pig was a former mascot for Piggly Wiggly who was retired 3 years ago. An incident report said Maggie broke out of her pig pen in the town of Meggett and began roaming towards a nearby farm.
The report says 26-year-old David Ashmore saw the pig on the side of the road as he was driving. He told deputies he then went home to get a handgun and returned to shoot the pig twice.
The motorist told deputies he shot the pig because it was running in and out of the roadway and he was afraid someone would hit it, causing a major accident. But witnesses told deputies the man mentioned taking the 700-pound pig to a local butcher.
Ashmore was fined $1,092 for malicious injury to animals.
