Mark Sanford finally gave his side of the story on Charleston affiliate WTMA Friday morning.
It was Sanford’s first interview since the Associated Press reported his ex-wife Jenny Sanford filed a complaint against him, accusing him of trespassing on her property on Super Bowl Sunday. The couple separated a few months after then-Governor Sanford admitted traveling to Argentina to have an affair.

Sanford said he and his 14-year-old son were attending a Super Bowl Party that night at the home of Republican fundraiser (and chairman of the state Board of Economic Advisors) Chad Walldorf. Sanford said his son was uncomfortable at the party and wished to go home. “He’s our youngest boy… He loves football… So, you try and reach your former wife. She’s out of town and flying back that night. You can’t reach her and you’ve got to make a call as a dad.”

Jenny Sanford returned home as Mark was leaving. According to her complaint, she confronted the former governor, since neither Sanford was allowed to enter the other’s home without permission.
Sanford admitted that early news reports made his conduct seem “creepy,” but defended his actions. “Am I going to let him sit there and watch the game alone or am I going to go in and watch it with him? I thought it was in the best interests of him as a boy,” Sanford said, “I didn’t try and sneak out of the house. I didn’t try to hide what had happened.” (AUDIO: Sanford: Thought it was in son’s “best interest”)
The Family Court documents filed by Jenny Sanford say Mr. Sanford had tried to visit her home several times since the divorce, in violation of the divorce agreement.
Sanford faces Democrat Elizabeth Colbert-Busch in the race for the open First Congressional District on May 7. His family court date over the trespassing complaint is May 9.
Sanford also revealed that he and Jenny spent Easter Sunday with their sons at the family’s beach house. AUDIO: Sanford says he and Jenny spent Easter with their sons (0:25)
