The Darlington County Sheriff’s Office says the mother of the four children who died in a mobile home fire in Hartsville has been charged with four counts of unlawful conduct toward a child and four counts of homicide by child abuse.
The Associated Press reports that 21-year-old Hope Hawkins was standing in her yard when firefighters arrived Wednesday screaming for someone to save her children that were inside the burning home.
Authorities say the bodies of 4-year-old Delonta Dixon, 2-year-old Camaron Mason, and 10-month-old twin girls My’asia and Ky’nasia Hawkins were found huddled together in a closet.
The Darlington County Coroner said that the four siblings died from smoke inhalation.
Investigators say they are not exactly sure how the fire started, but it was clear that Hawkins was not home when it did. The four children had been left alone.
Hawkins was taken to the Darlington County Detention Center.
