The highly publicized 1st District congressional election is less than a week away. The race between former South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford and businesswoman Elizabeth Colbert Busch is closely watched by political media because of the interesting back-stories.
It is being tracked on another level by political strategists because of what it may reveal about the state of party play in the South.
John Avlon, political director for Newsweek and columnist for the Daily Beast worked with South Carolina Radio Network and SC Patch on the only debate between Sanford and Colbert Busch.
He says this race adds to the argument that the old stereotypes of the South are falling away. He spoke with Ashley Byrd after Monday night’s debate.
