The Anderson County Sheriff says one of his deputies shot a man who was attempting to run over another officer with a pickup truck Thursday night.
Sheriff John Skipper said that Ricky “Pighead” Clark was shot in the shoulder and leg at the end of a car chase southwest of Anderson. He was taken to a nearby hospital, but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
The deputy was not hurt in the incident.
Skipper said two deputies were patrolling the area around 6 p.m. when they spotted a Ford F-150 pickup that they believed was stolen. The deputies said the other driver would not stop even after they turned on their blue lights. They said they pursued the car to Cleveland Road, where the pickup got stuck in mud.
The deputies said they got out of their vehicle and told the driver to get out, but Skipper said the pickup broke free from the mud and Clark began driving towards one of the deputies. The other officer started firing.
Clark has a substantial criminal history. In 2005, he escaped from an inmate work site in Union and remained on the run for three days before being caught. He also has a previous robbery conviction.
The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the incident, as it does for all officer-involved shootings.
