Former Governor Mark Sanford’s political comeback seems to be surging. Sanford has erased Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch’s lead in the race for the First Congressional District seat as the contest is now a virtual dead heat heading into Tuesday’s election, according to a new poll.
The latest survey by the liberal leaning firm Public Policy Polling, released Sunday night, shows that Sanford has erased a nine point deficit.
Conducted on May 4 and 5, the poll of 1,239 likely voters in Tuesday’s special election shows Sanford leading Colbert Busch by a margin of 47 percent to 46 percent — well within the poll’s 2.8 percent.
The survey is dramatically different from the one released by the firm two weeks ago, which showed Sanford trailing by 9 points . That poll was conducted just days after damaging reports surfaced that the former Republican governor is being sued by his ex-wife, Jenny Sanford for allegedly trespassing at her home in February.
