Civilian employees at Shaw Air Force Base near Sumter are receiving notices alerting them to be prepared for upcoming furloughs. According to base officials the furloughs will affect 570 civilian employees and are expected to begin on July 1.
Each employee will be furloughed for 11 days. The furloughed days will be spread out between July 1 and September 30. The employees will work with their commanders to select a day each week that will have the least impact on the base. The furloughs are the result of the federal sequestration cuts deal struck by federal lawmakers in order to increase the debt ceiling.
