A woman who worked for the Orangeburg County Treasurer’s Office has been arrested after being accused of embezzling $144,725.
The State Law Enforcement Division says 41-year-old Vickie L. Haynes of Orangeburg is being charged with embezzling more than $10,000 in public funds. She allegedly stole the money while working at the office from April 2012 to January.
A sworn affidavit from SLED stated that while Haynes was working at the treasurer’s office she was responsible for receiving payments from citizens. Investigators say she would steal money and then deposit it into her personal bank account.
She also reportedly wrote checks from her and her son’s bank accounts in order to cover up the stolen money.
Haynes was taken to the Orangeburg County jail. If she is convicted she could face up to 10 years in prison.
