Columbia Police have arrested three suspects they say killed a woman who was working at a bakery in the early hours.
Interim Columbia Police Chief Ruben Santiago said Monday that 18-year-old Troy Stevenson, 18-year-old Lorenzo Young, and a 16-year-old are in custody. The 16-year-old’s name was not released because he is considered a juvenile.
All three are facing multiple charges, including murder, in the death of 33-year-old Kelly Hunnewell. Hunnewell, a mother of four, was shot on July 1 as she worked at a bakery along Tommy Circle. The bakery supplied bagels for the Carolina Cafe restaurant in downtown Columbia.
“These arrests don’t allow this crime to come to a complete conclusion,” Santiago said in a press conference Monday. “Because now (Hunnewell’s) children have to think about what they’re going to do without their mother.
Santiago says the suspects had intended to rob a bar next door, but moved to the bakery when they realized the club was closed.
Investigators say the juvenile served as a lookout while the other two suspects went inside. Santiago said Stevenson and Young demanded money, but Hunnewell resisted. She was shot in the ensuing struggle. The men then left the store with no money.
Santiago called Stevenson and Young “documented gang members.” He said the 16-year-old, who was related to one of the other suspects, will also be prosecuted as an adult.
