The leader of a defense lawyers organization is accused of stealing from the group to pay for vacations, dental work, and even cosmetic surgery.
The Richland County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday that it had arrested South Carolina Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers executive director Tereasa Edmonds in connection with stealing $192,000 from the organization.
Sheriff Leon Lott said the arrest contains two counts of Breach of Trust over $10,000.
According to Lott, the President of the South Carolina Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers contacted the Sheriff’s Department in March 2013 concerning missing funds. The Associations President believed that Edmonds was responsible.
Lott says that an investigation by his department’s Financial Crimes Unit determined that, between 2004 and 2013, Edmonds stole $192,000 from the association.
The money was being used for trips, dental work, cosmetic surgery, computers, cell phones, clothes, food and more according to Lott. He says that Edmonds had no permission from the association to use the funds for her own personal use.
She turned herself into the Sheriff’s Department Thursday and was then booked in to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
