A global manufacturer is closing its plant in Orangeburg, leaving 200 people without jobs.
Federal-Mogul, a supplier for automotive manufacturers across the world, is consolidating its Orangeburg operations into larger facilities in Tennessee and Mexico. All three plants manufacture brake pads.
Company spokesman Jim Burke confirmed the company is laying off about 160 full-time employee and 40 contract employees due to the move in operations.
Those employees were notified Monday morning, he said. He said there likely only be “limited” opportunities to move any of those workers to the other plants.
Federal-Mogul says the decision to close the plant was difficult but necessary in order to compete in the global market. Company officials say Chinese and Indian manufacturers are able to sell their brake pads at a lower cost.
