Two swimmers who drowned in the ocean near a state park campground have been identified, while a third remains missing.
The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victims as 38-year-old Tiem Mok and his son 16-year-old Nathan Mok. Both were from Chesnee.
The teen’s body was found shortly after rescue crews were called to Hunting Island State Park Sunday. However, his father’s body was not found until Monday morning, after a beachgoer discovered it two miles down the beach.
A third swimmer— whom authorities are only identifying as a 17-year-old male relative from Philadelphia— remains missing. The Coast Guard, Department of Natural Resources, and park rangers are still searching for the third teen, but say it is now a recovery mission.
Witnesses told rescuers that the three were riding waves with boogie boards when the current began pulling them out to sea. A 14-year-old female with the group was able to safely return to land and try to get help.
