Former State Treasurer Thomas Ravenel was arrested in East Hampton, N.Y., Monday on charges of driving drunk.
According to the East Hampton Star newspaper, East Hampton Village police said they saw Ravenel swerving across lane lines and driving on the shoulder of the road. The newspaper reported that Ravenel refused to take a breath test at the police station.
His attorney told the judge the former treasurer was in East Hampton playing polo. Ravenel says he was not drunk and plans to fight the charges. His bond was set at $650.
Ravenel resigned as state treasurer in 2007 and pleaded guilty to cocaine possession, serving time in federal prison. He is now back with a real estate development firm that he founded prior to his run for office.
Most recently, Ravenel, who is doing a reality TV show for the Bravo network, has hinted he was considering a run for U.S. Senate against fellow GOP member Lindsey Graham.
