Emergency officials say a West Virginia man died after his vintage military plane crashed near the Georgetown County airport Monday afternoon.
The Georgetown County Coroner’s Office identified the pilot as 79-year-old John Prince Harris and said he was the only person aboard the Folland Gnat T.1 at the time. Coroner Kenny Johnson told reporters that Harris had a home in Georgetown.
Georgetown County Sheriff’s deputies are giving very little information at this time, saying they would wait until officials from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board arrive on the scene.
According to the flight tracking website FlightAware, the plane was on its way to Georgetown from Charleston, West Virginia when it crashed.
The Folland Gnat was a British training jet used by the Royal Air Force during the 1960s.
