Nearly two dozen eighth grade football players from the Sumter area were injured when the team’s bus crashed Saturday.
According to a Sumter School District spokesperson, the Alice Drive Middle School 8th-grade football team was returning home after a scrimmage Saturday when their bus crashed into a tree. The crash occurred at 12:30 p.m. Saturday along Highway 521 north of Sumter. The team had played at Hillcrest Middle School in Dalzell earlier that day.
WIS-TV reported that 12 students were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. 10 other students were taken to the hospital by their parents.
Troopers with the state Highway Patrol says driver of the bus (who was also the head football coach) swerved to avoid a vehicle stopped in the road. The bus went off the road and hit a tree. Troopers cited the coach with driving too fast for conditions.
