A driver and his passenger died during a police chase after authorities say they sped through a traffic checkpoint in Berkeley County.
Berkeley County Sheriff’s deputies said the car sped through a checkpoint used to confirm driver’s licenses and spot possible drunken drivers on College Park Road around 11:55 p.m. Wednesday. Several state Highway Patrol troopers were also at the checkpoint.
An incident report states that several officers had to jump out of the way of the 1998 Pontiac Bonneville, while others began chasing the vehicle. During the ensuing pursuit, the car ran several traffic signals and sped down a residential road before the driver lost control and crashed into a tree.
Investigators say the driver 52-year-old Gerald Washington of Summerville and passenger 50-year-old Dwayne Pierce died from injuries sustained in the crash.
The Charleston Post & Courier reports Washington, who has a lengthy criminal record, was wanted by the Summerville Police Department on two outstanding warrants.
Charleston County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating the wreck as state troopers and Berkeley County deputies were involved in the chase.
