An Upstate volunteer fire chief died after a tractor-trailer truck he was driving blew a tire and ran off a bridge in Anderson County Monday.
Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore said 49-year-old David Ray Wright of Seneca was helping his father, who delivers mobile homes, when he crashed off the state Highway 24 bridge over Lake Hartwell on Monday.
Shore said Wright was under water for almost 30 minutes before divers got to him. He was taken to nearby AnMed Health Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Another man in the truck suffered only minor injuries.
Wright was also a volunteer fire chief with the Friendship Fire Department in Oconee County. Oconee County Fire Chief Charlie King confirmed the death Monday, saying “Oconee County has lost a great man this evening.”
The coroner said Wright had been with the Seneca Fire Department nearly 24 years. He had worked with the Oconee County Fire Department about 35 years.
