The long battle over custody of Baby Veronica is over.
Monday night, Veronica’s birth father Dusten Brown handed over the four-year-old to Matt and Melanie Capobianco just hours after the Oklahoma Supreme Court removed legal roadblocks.
The Capobiancos now return to James Island from Oklahoma, where they have been in mediation with Brown.
The couple had been approved to adopt Veronica in South Carolina, but Brown, a member of the Cherokee Nation, evoked a challenge under the Indian Child Welfare Act and South Carolina’s Supreme Court sent the child to Brown and the case ended in the U.S. Supreme Court
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that it did not apply and the South Carolina Supreme Court ordered that the adoption be finalized. Brown did not return the child until he exhausted his case in the Oklahoma courts.
