A University of South Carolina student was arrested Tuesday and charged with lying about an attempted kidnapping along the school’s campus.
USC students received alerts Tuesday morning warning them that a black male had tried grabbed a female student as she walked along Pickens Street on the campus’s eastern edge. The initial report was that the man told the victim to come with him, but she was able to escape. The location was near the Moore Garden, less than a block away from several womens’ dorms.
However, USC Police now say that alert was based on a lie. They charged 18-year-old Rachel Mosser with filing a false police report and false swearing. A second campuswide alert around 5:15 Tuesday said that Mosser confessed the incident “did not occur.” The school did not say why would mislead officers.
“The suspect tied up valuable law enforcement resources, time and energy in trying to locate the so-called suspect,” said Interim Columbia Police Chief Ruben Santiago in a release. “This case should be a clear example of how lying to police will get you in trouble every time.”
