Authorities say a construction worker died after a piece of iron fell on his head at a plant in Aiken.
Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said in a release that 34-year-old Jorge Rodriguez of Vera Cruz Province, Mexico was removing steel beams at the AGY Plant on Monday when a 30-foot piece of iron fell about seven feet and struck him in the head.
Rodriguez died a short time later at the hospital. He was an employee of BK Construction in New Ellenton, Carlton said. The coroner says an autopsy will be conducted later on Tuesday to determine the cause of death.
AGY is a producer of glass fiber materials that are used in planes, electronics, and other products. The company’s global headquarters are located just east of Aiken. However, the victim was not an employee of the company, but was with a construction firm doing work on the facility.
