Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co. will close its two Charleston-area warehouses, according to a company statement released Friday.
The Charleston company, a franchise of the national Piggly Wiggly Corp., has entered into an agreement with C&S Wholesale Grocers to provide products to its stores and independently-owned Piggly Wiggly stores in its territory of South Carolina and coastal Georgia.
Parent company Piggly Wiggly Corp. is an affiliate of C&S Wholesale Grocers.
Operations at the warehouse located in North Charleston and the distribution center in Jedburg will be discontinued, the company said, and the full transition is expected to take 90-120 days. The news comes just two months after the company sold more than 20 stores in South Carolina and Georgia to Bi-Lo and Harris Teeter.
According to the company statement, this change is not expected to affect the products offered in Piggly Wiggly stores or affect customers in any way. Products will be delivered to stores from CSWG’s South Carolina distribution center in Greenville.
Spokesman Christopher Ibsen declined an interviewed regarding the closures, and would did not answer a request seeking information on how many employees will face layoffs. However, the company statement said affected employees have been provided with, at minimum, 60-days-notice of this change, and the company will assist with job hunting and provide a severance package for most employees.
