Devro Incorporated, a maker of collagen casings for food, plans to spend $60 million to upgrade and expand its operations in Calhoun County. This is the only plant in North America that makes food casings.
Company spokeswoman Hyacinth Walker says Devro’s product is wrapped around popular foods like Slim Jims, bratwurst, breakfast links, and sausages.
The expansion will include the construction of a new manufacturing plant at the site of the existing plant and the installation of high-speed production lines. The company says based on market growth, Devro will have the possibility of expanding to 12 lines.
Walker says the plant upgrades will not mean an increase to its 400 member workforce. Instead, the company begin training team members on the new technology in the second quarter of 2014. The first line is planned for July 2015.
