The popularity of online shoping is prompting a popular department store chain to expand its South Carolina operations again.
Charlotte-based Belk Inc., announced Wednesday that it is expanding its distribution center in Union County, expecting to hire 170 additional employees.
The department store said it will invest an additional $32 million to increase the Jonesville center’s capacity in 2014. Belk spent $9 million this year expanding the 500,000-square-foot facility, which it said would create 124 jobs.
The Jonesville facility serves customers’ online purchases. Belk executives say online sales have increased by more than 50 percent this fiscal year, compared to the previous year.
““Our e-commerce business continues to grow very quickly and we need to invest in our fulfillment capabilities to keep pace with that growth,” Belk president John Belk said in a statement released through the South Carolina Department of Commerce.
Belk operates 301 stores in 16 states, according to the statement.
