Gov. Nikki Haley’s husband Michael returns home Thursday from his military duties in Afghanistan.
He and about 40 soldiers with the South Carolina National Guard’s Agribusiness Development Team (ADT) 3-49 will be welcomed home in a ceremony taking place at Eagle Aviation in West Columbia around 12:30 p.m.
The unit was mobilized in January 2013 and deployed to Afghanistan after a month of training in Indiana. During their deployment, the ADT helped train local Afghan farmers in and around Helmand Province with such skills as irrigation, pruning, fertilizer and crop marketing.
Maj. Gen. Robert E. Livingston, Jr., SC Adjutant General, said in a statement that the team “helped create the conditions for a sustainable peace and stable society in southern Afghanistan.”
Gov. Haley has described his absence as difficult, but a part of being a military family.
