Perhaps you’re part of the growing demographic interested keeping local dollars local. Or you’re still hunting for that special gift. Or you have yet to do any Christmas shopping at all.
If you’ve got some shopping left to do, S.C. Department of Agriculture and S.C. National Heritage Corridor are giving some compelling reasons to buy South Carolina products.
As if you needed an excuse to buy a set of alpaca-hair mittens.
S.C. National Heritage Corridor released a shopping guide earlier this month, urging shoppers to take advantage of S.C. products. Some of the more interesting items include Firefly Vodka, fromage blanc and mosaic peach tables.
But why buy South Carolina?
“You’re supporting our local growers, local farmers and the local small businesses who are producing these items,” SCDA’s Kelly Coakley said. “It’s a win for our economy; it’s a win for us, just as consumers.”
Coakley said the state’s jams, jellies and barbecue sauces make great stocking stuffers. This doesn’t just keep dollars local, but it also encourages the gift that keeps on giving. That barbecue might end up on the recipient’s next dish.
“And then you get to benefit too,” she said.
Coakley said there are more than 550 retail locations that carry Certified South Carolina products or produce — including locations like Walmart and IGA. Click here to find more S.C. products. She said to look for the Certified South Carolina Grown or Certified South Carolina Product label when shopping.
“That’s how you know that special jelly or that special barbecue sauce was made right here in South Carolina so you’ll be getting the best our state has to offer,” Coakley said.
