An Upstate mother is being charged with felony DUI after an early New Year’s Day crash that killed her two daughters.
Oconee County jail records show Melissa Patton has been charged with two counts of felony DUI as well as driving under suspension. Highway Patrol troopers say Patton’s SUV hit a sign at Utica Baptist Church and flipped. Taniyia Gambrell, 1, and Saryia Patton-Dean, 4, were killed in the crash, which occurred along Wells Highway on the southeastern edge of town.
Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis said the two girls were both secured in child safety seats, but suffered fatal head injuries.
Patton remains in the Oconee County jail. It is not known if she has a lawyer.
