The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office says a inmate has died in the county detention center, three days after he was placed in their custody.
A release from Sheriff Lee Foster said Charles Butler, 76, of Chambersburg, Pa. was being held for his wife’s murder when corrections officers said he suddenly became unresponsive during a teleconferencing visit at the Newberry County Detention Center on Saturday.
Andreena Butler, 72, found dead in her Newberry home by a concerned friend on December 21. Officials said the Butlers had been married 50 years before separating last year.
Newberry County investigators obtained warrants on Charles Butler soon after the discovery. Mr. Butler was arrested by the Chambersburg, Pa. Police Department and was extradited back to South Carolina on Thursday.
The sheriff said Charles Butler was in the process of a tele-visitation when he became disoriented. Correction Officers said they took him from the room in a wheelchair when he became unresponsive. The officers said they attempted life-saving measures until Newberry County EMS arrived and determined there were no vital signs.
After an autopsy, Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton said the cause of death was natural causes by cardiomyopathy.
The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the incident, as it does for any death in police custody.
