For the second week in a row, progressive activists were cited after they attempted to block the entrance to the Statehouse underground parking garage.
About 12 “Truthful Tuesday” protesters were given field bookings and citations as they stood on Pendleton Street. Columbia Police did not actually take the protesters into custody, as they did last week. Instead, officers ticketed them shortly after the activists stepped into the street.
The demonstration lasted less than 15 seconds. Protesters who were ticketed are expected in court on March 28.
The South Carolina Progressive Network and other groups are holding the protests as they push state lawmakers to expand Medicaid eligibility under the Affordable Care Act.
