Officials have now identified a South Carolina man who was fatally stabbed at a state prison in Ridgeville earlier this month.
The Dorchester County Coroner’s Office has identified the inmate as Christopher Dewayne Gale, 30, of Columbia. Gale had been sentenced to almost 36 years in prison in 2002 after pleading guilty to charges of murder and armed robbery, according to Richland County court records.
Dorchester County Coroner Christopher Nisbet said Gale died from multiple stab wounds.
The State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has confirmed it is investigating a stabbing death that occurred at Lieber Correctional Institution on March 3, but the agency is releasing little public information. Spokesman Thom Berry told South Carolina Radio Network he could not say if there were any suspects at this time.
A spokeswoman at the Department of Corrections deferred all questions to SLED.
News of the stabbing was first reported by the Lowcountry crime blog “Charleston Thug Life,” which also identified Gale last week.
