An effort is gearing up to offer legal aid to low-income veterans in South Carolina.
Lawyers 4 Vets is a pro bono program that is joint effort by the Appleseed Legal Justice Center and attorneys throughout the state. The justice center’s staff attorney Ashley Thomas said attorneys will be volunteering to help vets with variety of legal services, including child support, conviction expungement, obtaining identification cards, as well as birth certificates and social security cards.
” We’re also going to help with consumer protection issues, wills, and healthcare power of attorney issues,” she said, but pointed out that the volunteer assistance will not include help in current criminal cases.
The clinic will officially start Thursday, May 15 at the William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia. Thomas said veterans who qualify may make appointments from 9 am to noon on the third Thursday of every month.
“The way it will work is a veteran will call a toll-free number and make an appointment, and we are going to screening them to make sure they meet income eligibility as well as subject matter.” Thomas said.
Vets can reach the service by calling the toll-free number 877-289-6000.
