Gov. Nikki Haley and her husband reported earning more than $280,000 last year, according to tax returns released to the public Wednesday.
The Republican governor has released her returns each year since running for the office in 2011. The move comes two weeks after her Democratic challenger State Sen. Vincent Sheheen reported earning roughly $333,000 in 2013.
The governor’s income came mostly from her salary ($106,000) and proceeds from her book “Can’t is Not an Option” ($105,000). The couple also reported $70,500 from real estate investments.
The reported income is $170 less than the couple reported last year, but does not account for all of their pay. Federal law does not require that Michael Haley report income earned during a deployment to Afghanistan last year. Capt. Haley spent most of 2013 serving with a National Guard Agribusiness Development Team and worked with Afghan farmers.
The Haleys donated about $126,000 to charity, $80,000 of it to the Original Six Foundation. Haley has previously promised that the proceeds from her memoirs would go to the foundation she created in 2011 to help rural South Carolina communities.
The Haleys reported paying a combined $20,700 in taxes — over $16,700 in federal and nearly $4,000 in state.
