A former sheriff with more than 30 years under his belt was arrested Thursday in Rock Hill.
Former Lancaster County Sheriff Johnny Cauthen turned himself in to Rock Hill Police detectives Thursday on two charges of damaging property. Back in June, two of his neighbors reported damage to their car and house, blaming Cauthen for using “slingshot” materials and a pellet gun.
Rock Hill station WRHI reports that one of Cauthen’s neighbors said in a June 6 police report that she was hearing repeated “popping” noises outside her front door. She told the reporting officer she saw Cauthen standing outside the back of her home and that he disappeared when she yelled at him. The victim claimed Cauthen broke the front glass door to her home. The incident report said the damage was worth $200.
In a separate June 6 incident, another neighbor reported a small dent in her windshield that looked “like a pellet gun” had hit it. The second victim said she came home to find slingshot pellets, marbles and paint balls outside her home.
Cauthen told the officers that he does not own a pellet or slingshot
The former sheriff, who retired in 2009 after 12 years in office, faces two counts of damage to personal property. He was released on his own recognizance.
