Authorities now say a teen who died at the state’s juvenile detention center Sunday committed suicide.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office said the 16-year-old hung himself late Sunday night. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital a little after midnight Monday. State Department of Juvenile Justice spokeswoman Loretta Neal confirmed the death Monday. “We did have a young man pass away here at DJJ in the detention center,” she told South Carolina Radio Network.
While the coroner’s office did give the 16-year-old’s name, South Carolina Radio Network usually does not identify minors who commit suicide.
Neal said the agency is not commenting further until the State Law Enforcement Division finishes its investigation.
She did not give any information on the teen, including the charges against him or why he was in state custody.
