Authorities are awaiting the results of an autopsy for a Summerville man who died after he fell into a pond at a Colleton County sand mine.
Emergency responders said they were called to the Murray Mines Inc., site near Ridgeville around 4 p.m. Monday. Colleton County Fire-Rescue director Barry McRoy told the Charleston Post & Courier that Kyle Martin, 29, fell into the pond where he and other employees were pumping out sand. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
McRoy told the paper that rescuers struggled to get to the site because it was located on a narrow dirt road. The paramedics had to loaded their equipment onto a volunteer firefighter’s pickup, which took them to the scene.
McRoy said it was not clear why Martin fell into the water.
The county coroner’s office said Wednesday morning that it is still waiting for the results of an autopsy.
