Gov. Nikki Haley has appointed a familiar face to lead the state Fire Marshal’s office.
Haley’s office announced Tuesday that she had appointed Robert Polk to the post. Polk, who took office on Friday, was the state fire marshal from 2000 to 2003 under former Gov. Jim Hodges.
He replaces Shane Ray, who took an executive job with the National Fire Sprinkler Association in May. Polk took over his new job Friday.
“His expertise will bring the right balance of common sense and knowledge of the necessary safety precautions to the position – two things that will serve the citizens and businesses of South Carolina extremely well,” Haley said in a statement, citing Polk’s 40 years of experience.
Polk had spent the past four years as fire chief of the Pinellas Suncoast Fire & Rescue District in Florida.
The fire marshal is part of the state’s Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation. He is mostly responsible for enforcing the state’s fire codes and other fire safety regulations.
