Hampton County emergency crews said four people suffered only minor injuries after a small aircraft crash that occurred close to a landing strip in the town of Varnville.
Hampton County Emergency Management director Suzanne Peeples said the pilot reported an emergency shortly before the aircraft went down in a wooded area east of the airport. The Hampton County Sheriff’s Office told WSAV-TV that all four aboard were transported to a nearby hospital via helicopter with non life-threatening injuries.
Officials did not give a cause for the crash, but said the aircraft had a parachute that deployed before it hit the ground.
FAA investigators were on the scene.
Varnville is a town of roughly 2,100 people located in the state’s southern corner. It is located about 65 miles north of Savannah and 40 miles northwest of Beaufort.
