The commanding officer at Coast Guard Sector Charleston has been temporarily relieved of command, according to an email from the Guard on Monday.
The email stated that Rear Admiral Jake Korn, Coast Guard 7th District commander, had relieved Captain Ric Rodriguez due to loss of confidence in his abilities to command. The email did not give any more specifics on why Rodriguez had been forced out of his position.
Rodriguez’s executive officer Commander Brian Falk has assumed temporary command of Sector Charleston. Rodriguez has been reassigned to Coast Guard Atlantic Area Command in Portsmouth, Va.
Capt. Rodriguez had been appointed as the top officer at Charleston in July 2013.
Sector Charleston is the regional operational command overseeing Coast Guard activities across South Carolina and Georgia. The sector includes 11 field units and more than 1,629 active duty, reserve, civilian and auxiliary personnel.
