The FBI identifies the suspect in the Charleston shooting.
He is 21 year-old Dylann Roof of Lexington, the Columbia area. He is still on the loose.
The U.S. Justice Department said they are opening a hate crime investigation into shooting of nine people at the historic black church in Charleston.
Six females and three males, including the church’s pastor, who was a state senator, were killed by the lone white gunman in one of the most deadly church shootings in United States history.
The suspect killed the nine during a prayer meeting Wednesday night at one of Charleston’s oldest and best-known black churches.
Police revealed no motive for the 9 p.m. shooting. Photos of Roof and his vehicle were released early Thursday.
“This tragedy that we’re addressing right now is undescribable,” Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen said Thursday morning at a press conference. “The law enforcement agencies that are working on this are committed and we will capture this individual.”
The vehicle he may be driving is a black Hyundai with vehicle tag LGF330. Anyone with information about his location call 1-800-CALL-FBI. He is considered armed and dangerous. Do not approach him if spotted, call 911.
