The State Law Enforcement Division is now investigating after police found a student’s body outside Clemson University’s football stadium Tuesday morning.
The Pickens County Coroner’s Office said 18-year-old Michael Allen of Dunwoody, Ga., appeared to have died after falling 120 feet from the Memorial Stadium’s South stands. Allen was a freshman pre-business major at the school.
Clemson University Police Chief Eric Hendricks said foul play is not believed to be involved in the death. “There is no threat to the campus,” he said in a statement announcing the death Tuesday.
Police responded to the stadium after a call Tuesday about an unresponsive person lying near Gate 13. It was not immediately clear when Allen would have fallen. Clemson’s last home football game had been 10 days earlier on Nov. 21.
“Our hearts go out to the Allen family, friends and his fellow classmates. A death is always hard, for it impacts us all, but even more difficult at this time of year,” Clemson’s Vice President for Student Affairs Almeda Jacks said in a statement. “We send our thoughts and prayers out for the loss of this member of our Clemson family.”
