State police are investigating the death of an inmate who had only recently arrived at a South Carolina state prison facility in Columbia.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office said an autopsy showed 21-year-old Donnell L. Candya died from head injuries Wednesday. Candya had been taken to a Columbia hospital before his death.
“An Autopsy conducted (Thursday) shows that he died from blunt head trauma and the Coroner stated it was not due to a fall,” the release said. “A final ruling on the manner of death will be pending further investigation.”
Watts said a final ruling on the cause of death will be released when the Department of Corrections and State Law Enforcement Division complete their investigation. SLED is not releasing any further information at this time.
Corrections Department spokeswoman Stephanie Givens said Candya had only been assigned to Kirkland Correctional Institute on November 13. The Longs native had just begun serving a 30-month sentence for illegal possession of a weapon after his arrest in Horry County. Court records also show Candya pleaded guilty to a drug possession charge in the same investigation, while ten other charges were dismissed in exchange for the guilty plea.
