Gov. Nikki Haley is scheduled this week to endorse the opponent of the South Carolina Senate’s top official — who’s also a member of her own party.
According to the Charleston Post & Courier, Haley will endorse former Florence County GOP Chairman Richard Skipper for the state Senate over incumbent Senate President pro tempore Hugh Leatherman, R-Florence. The governor and Leatherman have maintained a frosty relationship throughout most of her term.
Leatherman has been in office for over 36 years. In addition to his position as the Senate president pro-tempore, he is also chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, leads the legislative Joint Bond Review Committee, and also serves on the state’s Transportation Infrastructure Bank board..
He responded to the news of the endorsement by saying that Haley is trying to buy House and Senate seats using her political advocacy group, “A Great Day SC.” The group has more than $500,000 on hand.
Leatherman has raised nearly $1.5 million for his reelection bid.
