State Senate President Pro-Tem, Hugh Leatherman, R-Florence, has spent nearly $50,000 a week on his re-election campaign since April.
According to the Post and Courier, State Ethics Commission filings show Leatherman had $1.2 million on hand at the end of last month after spending $400,000 in the past two months, mainly on TV adds.
The disclosure shows his campaign is concentrating on his primary challenger, former Florence County GOP Chairman Richard Skipper, ahead of Tuesday’s vote.
After a strong fundraising pace this year Leatherman had increased support from Charleston-area donors who collectively gave more than $35,000, the most coming from any region in the state during the April and May reporting period.
Leatherman, 85, who has been in the Senate for 35 years, is also dueling with Gov. Nikki Haley. A Great Day SC, which is a political advocacy group created to target her political opponents, hits Leatherman in two TV ads. Skipper has been endorsed by Haley.
