South Carolina and Georgia will conduct studies over the next three spend for a joint $4.5 billion containership terminal. The studies will cost $15 million both states $15 million.
According to the Associated Press, the board of the Jasper Ocean Terminal approved a $5 million budget for the fiscal year beginning in July and said that the same amount will be needed the following two years.
The 1,500-acre terminal is planned for the South Carolina side of the Savannah River downstream from Savannah.
Three related studies must be completed before construction. One focuses on the environmental impact of the new terminal. A second will gauge the impact of building it in an area now used to pile silt dredged from the river.
The third deals with the impact on existing navigation on the river.
