Officials at Fort Jackson have identified a senior non-commissioned officer who died of heat-related issues following a morning run Thursday at the Army training base outside Columbia.
A Fort Jackson spokesman said SFC Clayton Hughes, 35, had just finished the two-mile run as the final part of the Senior Leader Course. The course was part of a required physical fitness test.
“(SFC Hughes) was completing the final lap of the run and as he neared the finish line he began to struggle with his balance,” Jones wrote in an email. “After crossing the finish line he began to show signs of being a heat casualty. Cadre on scene initiated emergency procedures for heat related injuries and contacted EMS.”
Jones said the sergeant was immediately transported to a Columbia hospital. He was pronounced dead at 7:56 a.m. On Friday, the Richland County Coroner’s Office confirmed the officer’s death was “heat related.”
Hughes served with Delta Company, 120th Adjutant General Battalion. The battalion works in the reception area of Fort Jackson where new recruits are processed before basic training.
