A new special army unit that works to link and coordinate U.S. military units with allied nations during overseas deployments is now based in South Carolina.
According to the Associated Press, the new 2503rd Digital Liaison Detachment was reactivated as part of the US Army Central forces stationed at Shaw Air Force Base near Sumter.
Col. Oscar W. Doward Jr., will assume command of the detachment, which had been inactivated in December 2014 due to a change in mission requirements. The 2503rd detachment is made up of 30 soldiers.
The unit provides communication capabilities, logistical, and administrative support for command units as it trains and carries out missions.
It also supports and supplies American military forces in the Middle East and central Asian region, which consist of more than twenty-four countries stretching from western Africa to Afghanistan.
