South Carolina state investigators are reviewing bystander video of a fight that ended with a man dead and two Charleston County deputies needing medical treatment.
The State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has begun an investigation of the incident in Ladson on Sunday afternoon, which the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office said began after deputies responded to reports of the man blocking traffic along U.S. Highway 78. Sheriff’s Office spokesman Maj. Eric Watson said the two deputies confronted the man, who removed one of their batons and struck both officers in the head. The spokesman said the officers struggled to detain the man, with at least one deputy using a Taser in the incident. Watson said no shots were fired.
Watson said a group of bystanders helped deputies subdue the man, who was transported to a hospital where he later died. The county coroner’s office has not yet identified the man or given a cause for his death.
The Sheriff’s Office said deputies Robert Bittner and Levi Reiter were released from the hospital late Sunday night. Both men are on temporary administrative leave while the investigation continues, as is department policy. Both men have been with the agency for 15 years.
Investigators have not said if any bystanders were also injured in the incident.
