Jasper County officials have identified a man who they said fatally shot himself after injuring a deputy and another woman Thursday morning.
The county Coroner’s office said 36-year-old Jason Cribb died of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. Cribb’s civilian victim remains in the hospital in critical condition as of Thursday afternoon.
Sheriff Chris Malphrus said a deputy was also struck below her right eye with either bullet fragments or shotgun pellet. Deputy Heather Betz responded with two others to a reported domestic violence incident at a home outside Ridgeland. Malphrus said Cribb began firing at the deputies with a shotgun and rifle as soon as they arrived on scene. A SWAT team later moved towards the home, but said they found Cribb already dead.
The other victim remains in critical condition after being shot in the head. She has not been publicly identified, but Malphrus said she made the original 911 call.
Betz is recovering after she was airlifted to a hospital for surgery. He is a K-9 handler who had been with the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office for eight months, Malphrus said.
